Martha Rich is an artist and illustrator who currently lives and works in Philadelphia. In a former life when I thought I might be able to make a go as an illustrator, I contacted Martha and we corresponded briefly, plus traded some prints of our work. I gave my husband David a print of Martha's painting of Johnny Cash and June Carter and it hung in his office for several years; I had a framed print of one of her paintings in my studio for a long time, but I realise now I haven't seen it in a while and it must be in one of those boxes we haven't unpacked since we moved four years ago (it's the painting of the mother and children above, which follows the painting of MEAT). Martha was kind enough back then to offer to talk to me on the phone about my art fears, but I didn't take her up on it because she didn't know me and it was... too kind. I now see her posts on facebook and see that she's just like someone I might know. Plus I recently saw her "artist's statement" for the first time, and found it interesting and inspirational (her work has a lot to do with picking up on tidbits of conversation... this will help you understand where her artist's statement is "coming from"):

Plus, an interview with Martha, which is where I saw her artist's statement:

The selection of work I've shown here is a weird mix of old and new... there's just so much it's hard to decide. (Blog post title thanks to Yasmin and Melanie)
